Insurance Coverage for Doulas
In 2023, the state of California required doula support to be included in Medi-Cal insurance coverage. Later, a law to eventually require commercial insurance coverage was also passed. The insurance landscape is constantly changing, with more and more commercial insurance plans including doula services every day. Call your insurance provider today to find out if you have a doula benefit on your plan.
Additionally, some employers provide fertility benefits that can cover doula care. Some provide a set stipend amount, while others provide a lifetime benefit amount. Ask your employer if they provide fertility or perinatal support benefits.
At Nurturing Nido, we currently are contracted with Commercial Kaiser, Medi-Cal Kaiser, Medi-Cal Healthnet, Medi-Cal Anthem, and a popular fertility benefit.

Commercial Kaiser
As a commercial Kaiser member, you are eligible for labor+delivery support and 11 visits with a doula. You have until the baby’s first birthday to use all the visits. At Nurturing Nido, although we do not provide direct labor+delivery support, we can join you post-delivery in the hospital to begin care.
Below are the type and number of visits you receive with your Kaiser doula benefit.
**The visit durations are specific to Nurturing Nido and may vary between doula providers.**
- One (1) Initial prenatal visit – (up to 3 hours, in home)
- Support after delivery – (pending availability, up to 10 hours day of delivery only, in hospital)
- Two (2) Extended postpartum visits (up to 8 hours each, may be overnight, in home)
- Eight (8) Prenatal/postpartum visits (up to 2.5 hours each, in home)
Medi-Cal Doula Coverage
If you have Medi-Cal insurance coverage, you receive the visits listed above PLUS, with a signed recommendation from a provider,:
- Nine (9) Additional postpartum visits (up to 2.5 hours each, in home)
Currently, Nurturing Nido is contracted only with the following Medi-Cal Managed Care Plans: Kaiser, Healthnet, and Anthem.
